Kyle McKee is the Head Instructor at Dragon Gym Phoenixville.  Get to know him a little bit better with this short interview.

1.      When did you first become interested in Taekwondo?

I had always been interested in martial arts. Taekwondo just happened to be the art I always saw people doing in movies. I fell in love with they way they moved and kicked, and it became a passion of mine

2.      Why did you decide to enroll at the Dragon Gym/become a martial arts student?

I always viewed the choreography in those movies as an art that, if done correctly, could move people just as much as any other art could. I wanted to study it for that reason alone, but I soon found out that Taekwondo was far more than just that.

3.      How did you get involved with teaching/becoming an instructor?

Teaching for me started as a random opportunity to just help train some of the up-and-coming black belt candidates, and I immediately fell in love with it. Soon after, I began teaching the classes on my own rather than just helping.

4.      You also recently graduated with art degree. Do you see this relating back to your teaching and training?

Whether I realized it or not at the time, taekwondo was training me for this my entire life. As I studied anatomy and animation movement principals, I came to see that it was improving my understanding of taekwondo.

5.      What would your advice be for someone considering Martial Arts training?

I am a huge fan of hard work and looking at problems from different angles. So if you're thinking about trying martial arts, the biggest asset you can have are the perspective to recognize hard work as fun, and the willingness to look at everything in a new light.

6.      What about someone with ambitions of becoming an instructor?

Becoming an instructor will make you better at what you teach. Explaining something to another person forces you to remember the core, essential principles that you are teaching, which will improve your own understanding.

7.      What kind of benefits have you received from your training at Dragon Gym?

I find the most valuable benefits come in the form of mental discipline. I couldn't even imagine what my life would be like if I had never walked through DG’s doors and learned how to not just control, but take control of who I am.

8.      What’s your next goal?

My next goal is to become a sparring coach.

9.  What fears and reservations did you have about starting here/your training?

I was always afraid of how much pain I would be in after learning how to fight. But once i got into my first class, I saw that this school wasn’t just about learning martial arts; it was about learning who you can really become.
