Master Karen Butala began her Taekwondo journey after being inspired by children she cared for while they attended classes at Dragon Gym. What started as curiosity quickly became a lifelong passion, leading her to earn her Black Belt in 2001.
In addition to Taekwondo, she continues to expand her martial arts expertise through training in Kumdo (Korean swordsmanship) and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Raised in an athletic family, Master Butala developed a deep appreciation for sports early in life. She spent much of her childhood on the baseball field and as her brother’s lacrosse partner during the summers. Her competitive spirit led her to success in multiple disciplines—first as a youth bowler, and later as a State Champion and national competitor in inline speed skating, where she had the unique opportunity to train and compete alongside Olympic athletes.
Teaching has always been a central part of Master Butala's martial arts journey. She began instructing as a Green Belt and has now spent over two decades helping students grow both physically and mentally.
Drawing on her degree in Kinesiology from West Chester University, she designs engaging, high-energy classes that blend fitness, foundational Taekwondo skills, and personal development—encouraging every student to reach their highest potential.
Outside the dojang, Master Karen enjoys spending time outdoors hiking and camping with her husband and their pets. She is also passionate about music and loves attending live concerts. She currently resides in West Chester, Pennsylvania with her husband, three dogs, and two cats.
